The WAVEZ Summer Surf 2025 – A Virtual Event for Early-Career Mainframers

The WAVEZ Summer Surf 2025 is a unique, free virtual event series designed to support the next wave of early-career mainframers (0–7 years in the industry). Whether you are just starting out, a student, or looking to level up your mainframe skills, this event is for you!

Taking place every week in August 2025, the event will feature 45-minute sessions delivered via Zoom. These sessions will provide practical insights, hands-on learning, and networking opportunities for mainframe professionals. Whether you’re in systems programming, application development, operations, or a student, WAVEZ Summer Surf 2025 has something for everyone!

🎯 Who Should Attend?

WAVEZ Summer Surf 2025 is aimed at mainframers who are within 0–7 years of experience in the industry. This includes:

  • Systems Programmers & Operations – Learn about the mainframe environment, operations, performance, and availability.

  • Application Developers – Gain insights into coding, programming languages like COBOL, Java, and Python, and tools for mainframe application development.

  • Students & Apprentices – Start your career on the right foot by learning directly from industry professionals.

  • All Mainframers – If you’re interested in broadening your mainframe knowledge, there’s something for everyone!

📚 What Topics Will Be Covered?

Sessions will be split across a range of key topics to suit various technical interests and roles. Topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Security – RACF, access management, encryption, and compliance

  • z/OS – Operating system fundamentals, JES2, JCL, workload management

  • Transactions & Messaging – CICS, MQ, APIs, messaging tools, and integration patterns

  • Databases – DB2, SQL, performance tuning, and data structures

  • Code – COBOL, Java, Python, Git, DevOps tools, automation, CI/CD

  • Storage – DASD, tape management, data backup, and recovery

  • Networks – TCP/IP, connectivity, mainframe network configuration

  • Soft Skills – Communication, career development, productivity, and collaboration

⚙️ Session Levels

Sessions will be divided into two technical levels to ensure accessibility and relevance:

  • WAVEZ 101 (Beginner Level) – For those who are new to mainframe concepts or in the early stages of their career.

  • WAVEZ 102 (Intermediate Level) – For those with some foundational knowledge of mainframes, looking to deepen their skills.
