Abstract:

This session is the first of five that provide a quick and easy introduction to the most important elements of the IBM zSeries Assembler Language. Each session covers key concepts to help you understand and write simple assembler programs, and provides illustrative examples.

Your learning will be enhanced if you can bring a PC-compatible laptop; but if you can't, the lab session (MH) will give you an opportunity to try some sample programs. We will provide a diskette, CD, or flash drive with the ASSIST/I assembler and host emulator you can use to write and test your programs.

Topics to be covered in Part 1 include:

  • Binary, hex, and decimal; number representations (1s complement, 2s complement, unsigned), and conversions among them
  • Basic hardware data types: binary, decimal, character (EBCDIC)
  • Main storage organization
  • Basic forms of binary arithmetic
  • How to get started with ASSIST/I
  • John Ehrman joined IBM in 1983, working initially on Fortran and inter-language issues, and in the early 1990s assumed responsibility for the High Level Assembler.
