Abstract:

Five years ago the BCS re-invented itself as the UK industry body for IT. Membership has doubled in that time to 65,000, the BCS now carries out over 25,000 examinations a month. The main purpose of the BCS now is to improve both the reality and the perception of the IT profession and its "Professionalism in IT" programme is leading many of the changes that are urgently required to make this happen. Certification of IT competency is a critical part of this programme.

David Clarke, BCS CEO, has led all of these changes in his six years with the BCS and will give an insight into the role of the BCS, their range of activities and how they are shaping the future of the IT industry. This will include global professionalism programmes, improving basic IT skills, creating specialist IT certifications and being the conduit between government and the IT industry, to ensure the IT industry keeps evolving and BCS remains at the forefront of this.
