"Be Recognized"
Session Speaker: Glenon Bagsby (New Era)Session Chairman:When: Tuesday 28th October @ 16:45Where: Hamlet |
An Input/Output Definition File (IODF) is the set of logical configuration statements that define hardware resources that are available to the z/OS operating system (OSCP) and the z/OS platform hardware (IOCP), their related ESCON/FICON Directors (SWCP), if any, and the connections between these resources. This structure has not had much change in z/OS but still remains one of the more difficult areas of the z/OS functions to support. Where once most system programmers understood the IOCP macros, there are few today that are trusted to delve into HCD and HCM.
The balance or in reality the lack of balance, between the UCB as build from an OSCP, and the UCW as build from an IOCP, has a major effect on the integrity of the z/OS Sysplex and its images. This includes for instance the correct device pathing and connections as well as the efficient use of virtual storage.
This session will discuss a new approach to managing the IODF for correctness, changes and balance - also referred to as drift. The traditional view of managing device definitions from a "vertical view", that is as an OSCP or an IOCP component only, will be replaced by a method that allows for the integration of a "horizontal view" across all the definition areas of OSCP, IOCP and SWCP. The use of the existing IODF functions will allow the user to fully understand and document devices at the "logical level" as contained in the IODF. The addition of new capabilities will allow the user to understand and link these devices at a "physical level" and "financial level" as well so that the IODF impact will easily be understood by other groups in the data centre
Glennon has over 30 years experience with the IBM Mainframe platform. He has worked in the military, public and private sectors. He joined NewEra Software, Inc. at its inception in 1989 and now serves the vital role of technical liaison between the user community and NewEra's development team. Having given this new presentation in the Share conference in San Jose, CA (August 2008), Glennon will also share the experiences and discussions from those sessions.
