The mainframe has again become a vibrant growing platform. IBM continues to invest significantly in this platform because it is vitally important to our clients and to IBM. Not only do traditional workloads continue to grow, but clients are adding new java, WebSphere and Linux workloads to the mainframe because they have discovered that the cost of ownership is lower than distributed alternatives when all costs are considered. Ray will review the IBM's investement strategy for mainframe software. He will cover recent announcements in this area and will also provide a view to strategic directions for the future. Ray joined IBM in December, 1975, as a large systems sales representative in the Chicago Insurance Branch. In 1982, he transferred to the Telecommunications Executive Briefing Center staff in Raleigh, North Carolina. In 1984, he was named Marketing Manager in the New York Insurance Branch; and in 1985 he became the Manager of the New York Area Software Branch. In 1987, Ray became the Administrative Assistant to the Senior Vice President of Development for the Application Systems Division. While in ASD, he also held various software development and architecture management positions. In 1988, he joined the Finance department as the Pricing and Forecasting Manager for the newly formed IBM Software Business. Ray was named Director of Finance Operations in 1990, and in 1994 he became the Controller for the newly formed Software Group. In 1997, he joined the AS/400 Division as CFO. He acquired responsibility for both AS/400 and RS/6000 Brand Finance in November 1997, and the AIX Brand Finance in November 1998.
In June 2000, Ray returned to the Software Group as Vice President of Marketing, Software Solutions. In June 2001, Ray assumed the leadership of System z Software Sales.
Ray has an undergraduate degree in History from Brown University, and MA and MBA degrees from the University of Chicago.
