Abstract:

An Introduction to System z hardware and Operating Systems The above presentation is aimed at giving an overview of computing on IBM's zSeries hardware. The following topics will be covered: ZSeries Mainframe computing What is zSeries computing? What can it do? How does it do it? Some interesting history; Support and operations for 'Large Systems'. Z Platform related hardware Hardware components; zSeries computers; z/Architecture, PR/SM and LPAR; (partitioning); DASD (disk) storage; Tape and Virtual Tape; other peripherals; networks. What is z/OS ? z/OS and how it works; CICS; DB2; Unix System Services; J2EE and WebSphere; Other Operating Systems (Linux and zVM) Sysplex Sysplex; Workload Manager

David is Technical Director for RSM Technology, a training company specializing in z/OS related software products. He has a Bsc in Computer Science from Strathclyde University (1972) and has worked with MVS (z/OS) since its introduction in the early 70s. In the 80s David worked as a Data Storage specialist for IBM and since then has carried out many consultancy assignments in this area. For the last 18 years he has been predominately occupied in the development and delivery of technical courses covering all aspects of z/OS related products. More recently David has been heavily involved in the development of the BCS MTP Certification that has been developed to give people working in the z/OS environment qualifications that are recognized worldwide
