Abstract:

The ability to store XML data in DB2 has rightly been the focus of much attention since DB2 9 for z/OS was announced, and is the topic of several sessions at this Conference. However, IBM also introduced a number of other useful new data types, BIGINT, BINARY, VARBINARY and DECFLOAT, which have received far less publicity. This presentation will correct this omission by covering all these new data types in more detail, explaining how to use them, how they are stored, what you can do with them and things you should be aware of if you decide to try and use them in your applications. For example, did you know that you can now store a value of Infinity in a DB2 Data Type? Well you can, although depending on which language you use you may not be able to use it in your programs! Come and learn how and clear up some other mysteries associated with these new type of data.

Steve is a Principal Consultant at BMC Software, supporting customers across the UK, Northern Europe, the Middle East and Africa. He has been a DB2 specialist since 1989 and was selected as an IBM Information Champion in 2009. Steve has presented on a wide range of topics at events across the UK and in Europe and is a member of the European IDUG CPC and UK DB2 User Group Committees.
